DON!! explained: the resource system that defines One Piece TCG

Two DON!! a turn, ten maximum, and every one of them can be a cost or a +1000 power boost. Here's how to actually spend them.

The short version

  • You gain two DON!! per turn automatically, up to a maximum of ten in play, so you never miss a resource drop.
  • Each active DON!! can either pay part of a card's cost or be attached to a character or Leader for +1000 power that turn.
  • Attached DON!! returns to your cost area during your next Refresh phase, so the power boost only lasts one turn.
  • Several cards have 'DON!! x1' or 'DON!! x2' abilities that only switch on while that many DON!! are attached to them.
  • The DON!! deck is 10 cards and is separate from your 50-card main deck.

If you have played any other trading card game, the DON!! system is the thing that will feel genuinely new. It removes the resource problem that dominates Magic and Pokémon — you cannot be starved and you cannot be flooded — and replaces it with a purer question that you answer every single turn: do I spend this on the board, or on damage?

The basics

Your DON!! deck contains ten identical DON!! cards and sits beside your main deck. During your DON!! phase you move two of them into your cost area, active. The first player takes only one on their first turn, which offsets going first.

Once you have ten DON!! in play you stop gaining more. That is the ceiling of the game, and it's the reason ten-cost cards exist and are meaningful.

Use one: paying costs

To play a card, rest active DON!! equal to its cost. A 5-cost character means resting five DON!!. Rested DON!! becomes active again during your next Refresh phase, so your available resources reset every turn regardless of what you spent.

Use two: attaching for power

During your Main phase you can take active DON!! from your cost area and attach it to a character or to your Leader. Each attached DON!! grants +1000 power until the end of the turn.

This is where the game lives. A 5000-power character with two DON!! attached hits for 7000, which is often the difference between an attack that gets Countered away and one that forces the opponent to spend two cards from hand stopping it.

DON!! x1 and DON!! x2 abilities

Many cards carry abilities written as [DON!! x1] or [DON!! x2]. These are conditional: the ability is only active while at least that many DON!! cards are attached to the card. Attach one DON!! to a character with a DON!! x1 ability and you get both the +1000 power *and* the ability text switching on.

These abilities are the main reason attaching is not simply a damage decision. A DON!! x1 ability that grants Rush, or lets a character attack an active character, can be worth far more than the 1000 power that came with it.

Attaching to your Leader

Your Leader attacks too, and it can carry attached DON!! like any character. Leaders typically have 5000 power, and two attached DON!! puts them at 7000 — enough to trade with most mid-game characters. Leader attacks are efficient because your Leader never leaves play when it loses a fight; the worst case is that it stays rested for a turn.

Common DON!! mistakes

MistakeWhy it costs you
Attaching before declaring attacksYou give away information. Attach only when you know what the attack needs to beat.
Holding DON!! 'in case'Unattached, unspent DON!! at end of turn does nothing at all. It doesn't carry over.
Always spending to the last DON!!Sometimes the right play is a cheaper character plus two attached DON!! rather than one expensive card.
Forgetting DON!! x2 needs twoA DON!! x2 ability with only one DON!! attached is simply off. Check the requirement before you commit the attack.
Ignoring Leader attacksYour Leader is a free attacker every turn that costs nothing to deploy and cannot be knocked out.

How DON!! shapes deck building

Because DON!! is guaranteed, the curve of a One Piece deck is much tighter than in games with random resources. You know you will have exactly two DON!! on turn one, four on turn two and so on, which means a card's cost maps directly to a turn number. Our deck building guide covers how to build a curve around that certainty.

Frequently asked questions

How many DON!! cards do you get per turn?
Two per turn, placed active into your cost area during your DON!! phase. The player going first gets only one on their very first turn. You stop gaining DON!! once you have ten in play.
What does attaching a DON!! card do?
Attaching an active DON!! to a character or your Leader gives it +1000 power until the end of the turn, and switches on any DON!! x1 or DON!! x2 abilities on that card if enough DON!! are attached.
Does attached DON!! stay attached?
No. Attached DON!! returns to your cost area during your next Refresh phase, so the power boost lasts for one turn only.
Is the DON!! deck part of your 50 cards?
No. The 10-card DON!! deck is completely separate from your 50-card main deck and doesn't count towards deck size.
