Set Sail Deck Set SD-01: is it the best way to start One Piece TCG?

Two decks, two deck cases and a playmat-style sheet for less than two starter decks. Who should buy Set Sail and who shouldn't.

By the Bounty team · How we write our guides

The short version

  • The Set Sail Deck Set [SD-01] was released on 18 September 2026 at a suggested price of $24.99.
  • It contains two constructed decks of 51 cards and 10 DON!! cards each, one OP-17 booster pack, a two-player playsheet, two guide books and two deck cases.
  • The two Leaders are Monkey D. Luffy (OP15-098, Yellow) and Portgas D. Ace (OP16-001, Red).
  • For two people learning together, SD-01 costs less than two regular starter decks at $16.99 each.
  • SD-01 is sold in Bandai's English regions; the Japanese official site has no page for it.

For two people learning the game together, yes: the Set Sail Deck Set [SD-01] is the cheapest complete way to start. For $24.99 you get two ready-to-play decks, led by Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace, a two-player playsheet, two guide books, two deck cases and an OP-17 booster. If you're learning alone or already know the rules, a regular starter deck makes more sense.

SD-01 came out on 18 September 2026. Bandai's English page describes it as a way to learn the game 'with the help of Luffy and Ace'. We checked the contents and both Leader cards on that page on 18 October 2026.

What's in the box

  • Two constructed decks, each with 51 cards (a Leader plus 50) and 10 DON!! cards.
  • Leaders: Monkey D. Luffy (OP15-098), Yellow, and Portgas D. Ace (OP16-001), Red.
  • One OP-17 The World's Strongest Warriors booster pack.
  • A two-player playsheet, which marks out where every card goes.
  • Two guide books (two different ones) and two deck cases.

Both Leaders are reprints of real cards from OP-15 and OP-16, not simplified tutorial cards. Luffy cares about Sky Island Characters with 6000 base power or more; Ace gives Rush to Luffy or a Whitebeard Pirates Character with 8000 power or more. That means the decks teach the actual game, and the cards stay useful once you move on.

Starter prices here are the $16.99 Bandai lists for ST-37 and ST-38; older starters vary by store. The saving is around $9 against two starters, plus things a beginner actually uses: a sheet that shows the play areas and a guide book for each deck. If you want a specific theme, our guide to the best first starter deck has the full lineup.

Learning the game with SD-01

  1. Take a deck each

Red Ace tends to attack, Yellow Luffy leans on Life. Neither is a trap, so pick the character you like.

  2. Lay out the playsheet

Put the Leader, deck, DON!! deck, Life and trash where the sheet shows. Getting the layout right first time prevents most early rules mistakes.

  3. Read the guide books together

Follow one turn at a time rather than reading cover to cover. Our how to play guide covers the same rules if you get stuck.

  4. Play three games, then swap

Swapping decks shows you the matchup from the other side, which teaches the Counter step and blocking faster than anything else.

  5. Decide what comes next

If you're both hooked, find a store event or pick a starter deck in a colour you liked. The OP-17 pack is a taste of boosters, not a reason to buy a box.

Who shouldn't buy it

If you already know the rules, SD-01's decks will feel thin quickly; a starter deck or a budget list from our budget deck guide gets you closer to something competitive. If you're learning alone, half the box is a second deck you'll only use if someone sits down opposite you. And if you only want the Luffy and Ace Leaders as collectables, they're standard-art reprints, so singles are cheaper.
